Petit Étang, Nova Scotia – This campground at the western entrance of Cape Breton Highlands National Park offers access to hiking trails in the western side of the park. Two very nice hiking trails leave right from the campground (Acadian and Salmon Pools).  While we had no cellular service at our campsite, we found very good Verizon LTE access with a 10 minute walk up the Acadian trail. The town of Cheticamp has a good french bakery (Aucoin La Boulangerie), multiple restaurants, and a good sized grocery store (Co-op).

Cheticamp

Cheticamp is located at the western entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park

We had a full hook-up site (#110) with 50 amp service. This row of campsites is right next to the maintenance building for the park (called “Compound” on maps). The workers were not there in the evenings, but it could be rather noisy during business hours. The sites and interior road are gravel.

Salmon Pools

The Salmon Pools Trail travels beside the Cheticamp River

Skyline Trail

The Skyline Trail is the most popular in the park due to its views of the Cabot Trail (road) and the Gulf of St. Lawrence coastline

From here we hiked the following Cape Breton Highlands Trails: Acadian, Salmon Pools, Le Chemin du Buttereau and Le Buttereau, Le Vieux Chemin du Cap-Rouge, Skyline, Bog, and Benjie’s Lake Trails.
