Eating at in Torrey, UT, home base to hiking in nearby Capital Reef National Park, can be as simple or as adventurous as the diner desires. Please note there is no true grocery store in town, just a general store which is fine for an occasional item (tip, they have yummy baked goods). We ended up staying at the local RV park for 9 nights, and we found the closest grocery store is in Lyman, about a 30 minute drive each way.

  • Capital Reef Inn & Cafe – Basic, non-pretentious fare in a relaxed setting, with an attached gift shop that showcases local artists and authors. I particularity enjoy the ten-vegetable salad and the mushroom lasagna.
  • Slackers Burger Joint – Sometimes you crave a juicy burger and creamy milkshake after a long days hike — this is the place.
  • Cafe Diablo – The dusty, zero stop light town of Torrey is an odd location for a high end restaurant, but here you go. My recommendation is to stop asking why and just go. The food is tasty, the menu quirky and the presentation is bordering on extreme, challenging gravity with every plate. The Watermelon, Feta & Arugula Salad is the perfect beginning on a hot summers day, while the Rattlesnake Cakes fail to elicit excitement, eating rattlesnake not-withstanding. I never turn down a nice lamb shank, and the Lamb Shank Tempranillo does not disappoint.
