Red Lodge, MT – I don’t enjoy giving a low rating to a campground, but in this case it’s merited. The owners just don’t seem to care about preventing damage to their guests’ motorhomes. It all started during check-in when the employee drew a map on how we should drive to our site and Karla noticed a corner that looked particularly tight and mentioned it. This raised the employees hackles who responded with an attitude: “if you don’t think you can make that corner just drive however you want.” Well, it’s a good thing we didn’t listen to the employee because not only was that corner impossible to make in any motorhome, we would haven been facing the wrong way for hookups!

The site was long enough for our RV and Jeep

The next challenge was negotiating a very tight bridge with non-trimmed trees on both sides. Now our 3 month old motorhome has scratches down the entire side. Nice. Then we had to make an extremely tight U-turn before winding our way between pickup trucks sticking out into the road (most campgrounds would not allow this) before finding our site. Our “pull through” site (#35) is a weird little plateau that drops down quite a bit in the front. In fact, I don’t think I can even pull forward to exit our site. I’m afraid the bottom of the unit would make contact with the ground.

There is a steep drop off in the front of the so called pull through site

Our site had two lawn sprinklers actively sprinkling water everywhere, making for unnecessarily muddy conditions. One sprinkler was hooked up directly to our fresh water spigot, which I promptly unhooked so we can have the water we’re paying for. Karla turned off the other one on the passenger side so that it would not be spraying into our front door or cargo bay doors. Then we had children running amuck on rental bikes with no parental supervision. This is fairly normal at many campgrounds except for one thing: there were two KOA employees on ATVs encouraging the kids behavior by driving loops around the campground and taking shortcuts through the grass right next to RVs!

All in all, this is one of worst run RV parks we’ve experienced. We love hiking in the Beartooth Mountains and Red Lodge, MT, but we’ll not be staying at the Red Lodge KOA again.
