Cooper Landing, AK – A US Forest Service campground situated on the shores of Kenai Lake and located off the Sterling Highway near the town of Cooper Landing. Like all USFS campgrounds the price is $18/night for a site with no hookups. The online reservation system handily lets you select the exact site you want, and some campground even include pictures of every site. We chose site #12, a long pull through site that would have offered plenty of room for any size RV had they pruned some low hanging branches. I’ve often contemplated bringing long handled pruning sheers to prevent scratches from such situations. I think this tells me class A motorhomes are not the intended target, and from walking around this campground I seem to be right.
Just so you know, that $18/night price is only available if you don’t reserve online and just show up hoping they have availability. If you opt to reserve ahead of time they tack on a $9 “online administration” fee, seemingly disincentivizing those who prefer to plan. However, I walked the entire campground loop (45 sites) and noted about 75% of the sites were reserved online and only 25% were walk-ins, which indicates the public’s preference for reservations even with a silly fee.
While staying here we visited the Cooper Landing area including the Skilak Lake Wildlife Recreation Area and had a nice dinner at Kingfisher Roadhouse.
I wrote the above before leaving this campground, and now that we’ve left I need to add something: class A motorhomes should not use this campground at this current time due to multiple instances of unavoidable low hanging branches. It would be a simple task for the USFS to trim these branches back, but they either don’t expect 13’ tall RVs or don’t care.
