Porterville, CA – Our first experience with an Army of Corp of Engineers campground was not the most positive one. Although I’m hoping this was an isolated experience as I like the concept (less expensive and larger site vs. private campgrounds). There were no staff on duty when we arrived, but they had a little camp map we used to find our site. I guess if you hadn’t reserved a site online you need to check in? The site was very nice except for one (very) important thing: it was not level at all. We spent over an hour trying to get our unit level, and never did. From inspecting other sites this problem seemed specific to just the section we’re in. If there were any staff on duty I’d inquire about moving.

From here we visited Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park.
