Ingonish, Nova Scotia – Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a hiker’s paradise, and this campground puts you right in the middle of the trails on the eastern side. A bonus is that it’s actually nice, with glorious 50 amp service…and it has constant voltage! This followed 3 weeks in Maine and Canada in campgrounds that couldn’t provide 120 volts during peak usage. Add in long and level sites (a 45’ RV would fit, despite the National Park’s 35’ limit) and you have a campground we’d return to in a heartbeat.
We highly recommend breakfast at The Dancing Moose Cafe, about a 20 minute drive south down the Cabot Trail. They specialize in Pannekoek, a Dutch pancake that is thinner and larger than American pancakes, stuffed with a variety of toppings, both sweet and savory. I opted for sweet (strawberries and whipped cream) but I was strongly tempted by the gouda and bacon one. The owners are friendly and the food is great. Marvel at the tiny kitchen the sole chef has to turn out, quickly I might add, scrumptious dishes. Impressive.
We had no Verizon LTE service at the campground, but a short hike to the top of Broad Cove Mountain (on the other side of the Cabot Trail/highway) provided a few bars. This campground had perimeter walking trails and access to the beach at Broad Cove.
From here we hiked the following Cape Breton Highlands National Park trails: Franey, Middle Head, Warren Lake, Broad Cove Mountain, Branch Pond Look Off, Jack Pine, Coastal, and Mica Hill. We also hiked to Stanley Point at nearby Cape Smokey Provincial Park.
