Pelahatchie, MS – This has the potential to be a really nice destination RV park. Instead it’s a bit run down, with unlevel sites and dogs barking at all hours. Located on a scenic lake about a 15 minute drive from Jackson, MS, this campground has it all: full hookup sites, tent sites, some sites that back to the lake, dozens of rental cabins, boat rentals, fishing piers, a water park, tennis courts. To be fair we stayed in the off season, and perhaps by May everything will look nice and be in working order. From here we visited Vicksburg National Military Park, and other state/regional parks near Pelahatchie as well as driving on the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Lake Pelahatchie

This large camp is laid out around Lake Pelahatchie. They rent golf carts for getting around.

woods

The sites in our section are nicely wooded, but require consideration for RV placement so slides can be opened

Our pull thru site, #201, was very long…and also very unlevel. We used all 8 leveling blocks we carry and did manage to level. Well, until we started to sink into the soft gravel/mud. Concrete site pads would be nice. If you pay more for a premium site you do get a concrete pad, but you have to back in and the sites are shorter. But then again, our pull thru is not really a pull thru. You have to drive up a very step and short hill, followed by a very sharp U turn. I would bet large amounts of cash that if we attempted to drive forward out of our site the rear unit of the coach would drag on the ground.

site

Our site is plenty wide and long

site

Unfortunately the site is on a hill and is unlevel. We needed to use 8 blocks on the downhill side to level, but then were sinking into the ground

egress

Our site is considered a “pull through” but we cannot physically make turn A due to trees and its quick downhill would likely scrape the underside of our 45′ RV (including the trees at the front left corner of the site). Route B is technically through another site and would require a right turn at a quick downhill which would also likely scrape the bottom of the RV and is not possible if someone else is parked in the site when we leave.

egress

Another view of Route B.  Route C is an uphill U-turn which would result in scraping the underside if we even could make it without catching the back on a tree (front right corner of site).

egress

One final picture of B&C taken from standing at ground level shows the steep ascent and break over for the Route C U-turn.  We will be taking Route D: backing out of our site, up the hill and onto another park road to turn around rather than trying to avoid hitting trees or scraping.
