The Kingfisher Roadhouse in Cooper Landing, Alaska is a culinary standout in an otherwise barren land of bland, lets-fry-everything eateries in the North. It’s located at mile 47.4 of the Sterling Highway. The menu is inspired by locally available game, fish and produce rather then by the timing of the next Sysco truck delivery. I ordered caribou stroganoff with shallots and green beans grown onsite and Karla had Shelikof scallops with polenta and butternut squash. We also shared a bread basket with homemade bread served with a side of balsamic vinegar/olive oil/herbs.
We opted to dine al fresco on the deck over looking the beautiful Kenai Lake surrounded by towering snow capped mountains. They also had a reasonably large selection of craft beers and ciders with an emphasis on Alaskan breweries. I had a cherry-apricot-pear cider that was the perfect crisp and sweet complement to the heaviness of a stroganoff.
