Seward, AK – A good, but not particularly noteworthy, spot to park an RV for adventure in the Seward area. This is another in a long line of “parking lot” style RV parks we’ve found in Alaska and Northern Canada — I’m sensing a trend (there is nothing offensive about these parks, outside of accidentally staring into your neighbors window, which is 5 feet away from your window with no buffer, and perhaps seeing things you don’t want to see). The hookups are fine and the spaces are level, if not a bit tight. The wifi is slow to the point of being unusable. There was an oddity when, upon check-in, after paying for our site, the employee just kind of trailed off and walked away. He didn’t tell us what site number we’re in. A quick query rectified that situation, but then he didn’t tell us how to get into our space (for non drivers of 40′ motorhomes towing a car, you need details on how to maneuver around a tight campground, and such directions are de facto standard at every other RV park). Another query yielded a nonchalant and non-confident answer of “turn around up there, I guess”.
From here we toured the Kenai Fjords on a boat tour, spent a day hiking in the Chugach National Forest, and hiked & viewed Exit Glacier & the Harding Icefield in Kenai Fjords National Park. We checked out several eateries and the grocery store.
There are two things to keep in mind about this park: 1) it’s located down a dirt road (replete with potholes) that turns into a mud bog with rain, which is common in coastal Alaska and 2) it’s 7 miles North of town. We really wanted to stay in town, but the only RV “park” in town is run by the city and does not take reservations, which is less than ideal for people who thrive on determinism and travel to popular destinations in the summer months.
