Girdwood, AK – In winter the Alyeska ski resort parking lot is full of snow seeking skiers, but in the summer they open it to RVers for only $10/night. While there are spots for 30 RVs, we had a max of only 5 during the 4 nights we stayed. The spaces are large and level and feature a first class view of the snow covered Chugach mountains that tower over the resort. There is a 5 night max stay, no reservations are taken. Follow directions towards the Day Lodge and park in the large paved lot. Note your space number and stuff $10 bills into the corresponding slot on a metal box at the front of the lot.
There are a number of hike and mountain bike trails that start right from the parking lot. You can bike, walk or jog on the popular paved multi-use Gird to Bird Trail. For heart pounding fun, head straight up the black diamond ski run to the upper bowl, which offers phenomenal views of the town and Turnagain Arm. As I quickly found out, coming back down is much worse than going up. My knees are still recovering. You can also walk to the Winner Creek trailhead from here. Don’t forget to explore the small town charm of Girdwood. We also took a day trip to the Portage Valley to view glaciers & hike and visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
