Chitina, AK – This is a free campground with no hookups located just off the banks of the Cooper River. No reservations are taken, so if you’re arriving during the salmon season, especially during the weekend, don’t expect to find a space. We arrived Sunday afternoon near the beginning of salmon season, so we managed to snag a spot. There are no formal campsites here, just some spaces between trees with fire rings that clearly have been used before. I think the Alaska DOT officially lists 10 sites, but if you’re friendly with your neighbors you can fit more.
This campground is ideally located at start of the McCarthy Road, perfect for day trips to McCarthy and Kennicott or salmon fishing on the Cooper River.
