As you may have read, we had a golf ball sized rock flung by an oncoming truck into our windshield. This caused a 2 inch diameter rock chip. Mike had covered the area with scotch tape in Dawson Creek. We drove through 3 days of rain and snow before arriving in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, with few services along the route. Luckily for us, Bruce “the Glass Doctor” has a Glass Magnum Mobile Repair Service in Whitehorse. Mike called him first thing Monday morning and he said he’d be out to our RV at our campground by about noon. We did not need to be there. He would leave a receipt in the door.
We actually ran into Bruce as we were leaving our tour of the SS Klondike. He was repairing a crack on a class C motorhome in the parking lot. We chatted briefly and he said our repair was his next stop, so we met him at our unit. He showed us an area where we had chip that was beginning to run outward, but that the largest part of the damage would probably not spread. While we will ultimately need to replace the windshield at some future date, he felt that with two repairs the damage should not spread and we should be able to complete our trip. He first addressed the chip that was spreading outward and then filed and smoothed the larger area, so that the windshield wiper would not catch on the rough surface.
The repair process involves cleaning the areas thoroughly and then filling with resin which is cured through the use of an ultraviolet light. He did a great job and we are very pleased with the results. We got to chat with him about his business, and found out he is busiest in June. He said in May he gets about 2-3 calls per day, but by June it spikes to 10-15 calls per day. The majority of these are folks traveling to Alaska. Sometimes he gets repeat customers who have him fix more chips on their way home.
If you find yourself needing a windshield repair in the Whitehorse area, we heartily recommend Bruce the Glass Doctor, who will come to you at your campground or a local attraction, He can be reached at: 867-668-2482. He accepts credit cards. Our repair bill was CA$100 or about $70.00. We’re hopeful this will get us through our trip. We did not receive any compensation or discount for writing this review.
