The Legacy Trail is a paved multi-use trail for walkers, cyclists, and rollerbladers that runs for 15.5 miles from Banff Avenue in Banff to the nearby town of Canmore. It travels parallel to Highway 1, so its not the most peaceful cycling, but you don’t have to be worried about getting mowed down by a passing truck. There is another, shorter section of the Legacy Trail (about 5 miles) on the west side of town which heads out by Vermillion Lakes.

The Banff Legacy Trail provides a safe place for bikers riding to Canmore

While the road noise is unavoidable, the views are some of the best we’ve seen from a bike trail. I don’t think there is any part of this trail from which you cannot see a mountain. The trail is well maintained and features a center line to delineate lanes. This trail is inside of a high fence that was constructed to keep wildlife off of Highway 1, which keeps the chances of running into a large mammal to a minimum.

We really enjoyed our ride on this trail. Be prepared for changing elevation. There is a picnic area with vault toilets along the trail.
