Vernal, UT – A great base for exploring Dinosaur National Monument. The park itself is perfectly serviceable, it’s what I would call a typical KOA: easy ingress/egress for big rigs, large and level sites, all utilities work…but a little frumpy, and perhaps even dumpy. Note there is a mobile home park at the rear of the facility that may or may not be affiliated with the KOA — I can’t tell. In any case, it means a lot of extra traffic going to and fro at all hours.
From this campground we toured Dinosaur National Monument, Ashley National Forest, a Petroglyph auto tour and 4WD some trails on BLM land: Moonshine Arch & Red Mountain Road. The Flaming Gorge Recreational Area is located 25 miles north of Vernal.
