Gardiner, MT – The perfect location for (relatively) quick drives into the heart of Lamar Valley via the North Entrance. This park boasts amazing views of the Gallatin Mountains to the west and the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains to the east. The terraced hot springs of Mammoth are just a 10 minute drive away. There are a number of restaurants and a small grocery store in Gardiner.
From our front window, we watched a herd of 15 elk graze on the lawn of the church next door, maybe 100 feet from our RV. Bison also pass through the immediate area. The campground itself has wide spaces with some trees to help with privacy. Ingress and egress into the park are a bit odd, requiring negotiation of a one lane road up a short but steep hill. There are usually plenty of birds which adds high marks from Foxy the cat. You can also continue up Jardine Road past this campground for access to Gallatin National Forest. There are several national forest campgrounds in the vicinity, but we believe they are all primitive as is the Mammoth Campground which is inside Yellowstone National Park. Some have length restrictions.
We often split our time between here and Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone, which provides access from the west gate and is closer for reaching the southern half of Yellowstone. We enjoy and have written numerous posts about Yellowstone Wildlife Viewing and Photography. Our other favorite activity in the park is hiking and we have written two posts with our favorite trails, Day Hiking Yellowstone National Park and Yellowstone Day Hiking Part 2.
