Moab, UT -Wow, there really is a nice RV park in Moab! We’ve stayed in Moab, UT a number of times before, always at Archview Resort & Campground, which is just rows of tightly packed RVs in an open field, but The Portal is much nicer (and pricier). The niceness starts with paved roads and a concrete pad, amenities that are standard fare at most parks, but in dusty Moab they exist only here. Portal reminds me of class A motorcoach resorts we’ve stayed at, but all RVs are welcome here. Some sites have casitas, some have garages, and others have covered sitting areas.
Our site was a pull-in site with a view of the imposing cliffs surrounding Moab, affording us the rare opportunity to not close the front shades. Our concrete pad had plenty of room for a 45’ motorhome and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We also had a covered sitting area. There was also a mobile RV wash service available, which is a very handy way to clean grime off the RV while hitting the hiking trails.
From here we did a backpacking trip around the Syncline Loop in Canyonlands National Park. We day hiked at Dead Horse Point State Park, Arches National Park, and in Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky and Needles Districts. For quicker access to the Needles, we car camped for two nights at BLM’s Hamburger Rocks Campground (no hook-ups). We hiked to Corona Arch and Fisher Towers on BLM land, toured La Sal Mountain Loop and visited overlooks for the Needles and the Anticline in the Canyon Rims Recreation Area.
