Fruita, CO – This is a fine campground located a short & easy drive off I-70 in Western Colorado. But that is not why we stayed here. We chose this park due to its proximity to Colorado National Monument, only 2 miles away. Like many National Parks, National Monuments offer the same chance at outdoor adventure, but without the throngs of humanity. Colorado National Monument is 32 square miles of red rock desert canyons, sweeping vistas and pinon-juniper forest, with many miles of hiking trails snaking throughout.

Back to the Monument RV Park, the interior roads are all paved while the sites are gravel. Our site (#54) is very long but very narrow, meaning we can’t begin to unfurl awnings as they would hit the RV in the next site. Transient RVs are placed in the front of the park and look aesthetically pleasing, while the rear of the park is for “permanent” RVs and looks pretty much like a dump. This is the norm at so many parks I didn’t even deduct a star. All utilities worked well.

Bonus: you can walk to Dairy Queen in < 2 minutes (this recommendation makes more sense after hiking 10 miles in the blazing desert sun).
