Castroville, TX – Located 25 miles west of San Antonio, this park has it all: really long, concrete sites (100+ ft) that are nice and level, all paved interior roads, a co-located walking trail, good amenities and a quiet location. It’s also located right next to a golf course if that’s your thing. The main downside is unusably slow wifi, which I only mention because their website touts “fast wifi”. In 2 weeks here, the fastest speed I observed was a paltry 1 Mbps, but more typical speeds were 300 kpbs. So we did like we always do, use our Verizon LTE at ~10 Mbps speed. If only Verizon offered a true unlimited option.
If your main goal is to visit San Antonio every day, this park is just a little too far away. But after visiting New Orleans and Austin for the prior 3 weeks we needed a break from the urban life. So we mainly visited Texas State Parks and Natural Areas scattered throughout the hill country, many of which are west of San Antonio anyways. We used the book 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of San Antonio and Austin: Including the Hill Country to pick hikes in the region.
From our base at Alsatian RV Resort we checked out BBQ, Texas Style and completed numerous Hikes in Hill Country. In San Antonio we toured the Alamo, walked on the highly recommended River Walk, and toured the four missions of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. We also enjoyed touring the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch Safari.
