Cottonwood, AZ – Another great public rv park in Arizona (we also recommend Lost Dutchman State Park). We stayed here 8 nights as a homebase for hiking in Sedona and Precott as well as exploring National Monuments in the area. As an added bonus, you can hike right from the campground.

We hiked an 8 mile loop from the campground

The hike traveled through desert and scrub

Our site was very long and pretty level, and the electric and water utilities worked fine. There are no sewer hookups at any site, but there is a two bay dump station near the entrance station. I spent some time walking around all three campground loops and came to the following conclusions: 1) you can’t go wrong picking any site, 2) Quail loop has far more shade trees, which is good unless you’re parking a 45′ motorhome, and 3) Coopers Hawk loop and Red Tail loop are much better for parking a 45′ motorhome 🙂

The story of how this park got it’s name is taken from the state website:

“The story of the park’s name begins with the Ireys family, who came to Arizona from Minnesota looking for a ranch to buy in the late 1940s. At one of the ranches they discovered a large dead horse lying by the road. After two days of viewing ranches, Dad Ireys asked the kids which ranch they liked the best. The kids said, “the one with the dead horse, Dad!” The Ireys family chose the name Dead Horse Ranch and later, in 1973, when Arizona State Parks acquired the park, the Ireys made retaining the name a condition of sale.”
