Paxson, AK – Located about halfway between Delta Junction and Glennallen on the Richardson Highway, Paxson Lake Campground has 50 dry camp sites clustered in two loops. Many sites will not accommodate a 40’ motorhome, but I can confirm that site #5 does, albeit with challenging leveling. Both loops have a number of vault toilets and trash and recycling (aluminum cans only) bins, with a hand operated potable water pump located between the loops. Loop #1 contains a short hiking trail down to the banks of Paxson Lake. At the time of this writing there are a number of nesting bald eagles and eaglets easily visible from this trail. The campground also includes a no fee dump station and a boat launch. All for $12/night. We would love to return here with kayaks someday to explore the lake.
This is also an ideal location for exploring the eastern end of the Denali Highway, with stunning views of the Alaska range and several named glaciers. Unfortunately the timing of our visit (August 20, 2016) coincided with caribou hunting season, which apparently brings a mass of humanity and their myriad of gas powered conveyances to the middle of nowhere, all while toting rifles. Ironically, all the noise created by this bedlam prevented the hunters (and us) from seeing any caribou. I suspect this is perfectly peaceful land any other time of the year.
