Anchorage, AK – This RV park is conveniently located in Anchorage, AK. This campground is close to the Bike Trail system in Anchorage. I’m not sure I can say anything else nice about it. The park is currently garnering a 2.5 out of 5 rating on Yelp, which seems about right. Here is a snippet from a Yelp review, “Nestled in between a bad neighborhood and a REALLY bad neighborhood, this RV park leaves a lot to be desired”. To be fair, we’ve been in RV parks that were in worse neighborhoods, so there’s that. The obvious question is why are we staying here. It turns out this is the only option for an RV park near downtown Anchorage. In addition to biking, we checked out several Anchorage restaurants and hiked the Flattop Mountain Trail while staying here.

The sites are laughably small and tight. I kid you not. I literally started laughing when I saw the “big rig friendly pull thru” site that was neither big rig friendly nor pull thru (for a big rig). After moving picnic tables and much maneuvering and beeping like a cement truck in reverse we finally settled into the site. At least it was level and the hookups worked fine. Amazingly, the wifi was sufficient to stream video so we finally caught up on season 6 of Game of Thrones.

The extremely tight spaces had the side benefit of giving strangers something to talk about. The first words out of every motorhome owner’s mouth was, “can you believe how tight this place is?”  We actually ran into our first caravan, which is a tour of Alaska using your own RV where the company sets up everything for you and you drive and camp as a big group. There were about 18 RVs in this particular group run by Fantasy RV Tours. I enjoyed seeing the camaraderie and familiarity that traveling together over a month breeds. I’m conflicted over whether Karla and I would enjoy such a tour. Making friends and spending time with other people over the 62 days would be great, but the compacted schedule (we’re spending twice as much time in Alaska) and the popularity approach (we’re choosing out of the way places over the typical tourist spots as much as possible) would be a bummer. Still, I’m intrigued by their Baja Mexico offering.
