Slana, AK – This is a wild camping spot (no facilities or hookups) located in Wrangell-St Elias National Park, accessed via Nabesna Road. The camping spot is located at mile 16.6, with the first 15 miles being paved. The gravel portion is nothing worse than driving on the Alaska Highway, so go for it! There is plenty of room here for a large class A motothome and tow car, despite being told by the rangers at Slana Ranger station “you won’t fit”. The site is level, the views are grand, and the mosquitoes are hungry. Note there are no services down Nabesna Road, so bring all food, water and fuel to last your stay.
The price at this wild camp may be free, but the views are worth a million bucks. Karla and I spent literally an hour upon arrival just sitting in the driver & passenger seats gawking at the scenery, which include the glaciated slopes of 16,237′ Mount Sanford. There are a number of hiking trails off Nabesna Road that warrant spending a few days in the area, including Skookum Volcano Trail and Caribou Creek Trail.
