The Snowy Range is a very scenic area in the Medicine Bow- Routt National Forest located in southern Wyoming. We’ve car camped (tent) at Sugar Loaf Campground, which can accept travel trailers with site lengths of 30-35 feet. the campground is located at about 10,000 feet elevation. This is a rustic (i.e. no hook-ups), picturesque campground, one of several in the area, where every site has delightful views of the Snowy Range. There is drinking water and vault toilets.
The campground is convenient to a variety of hiking trails and two crystal clear snow-melt lakes – Libby and Lewis Lakes. Three popular trailheads originate in this area. We’ve hiked in the Lost Lake, Glacier Lake & Brooklyn Lake areas.
We use: “Hiking Wyoming’s Medicine Bow National Forest” by Marc Smith. This book includes trails for the Medicine Bow, Laramie and Sierra Madre mountains which covers over 1 million acres managed by the Medicine Bow National Forest.
There are opportunities for non motorized boating and fishing for brook, cutthroat and brown trout. There is a large network of forest service road that provide opportunities for exploring. ATV’s are permitted on some trails. In the winter, the network is converted into snowmobiling trails which are well groomed and ready for use.
