The standard solution to convert a Wrangler to flat towing is the Blue Ox base plate. However, this seriously decreases your approach angle. When modifying our Jeep to increase off road capability, we opted for a replacement front bumper with built in Blue Ox tabs. In this pic you can see the two tabs where the a Blue Ox tow bar attaches:
The last modification is to operate the Jeep’s taillights when driving the RV, which was as simple as installing a CoolTech wiring harness.
How to hook up the Jeep to the RV:
- Attach two pins (they have red handles) to the Blue Ox tow bar where it fits into the receiver on the Jeep
- Attach the two safety cables between the tow bar and the RV
- Attach the electrical cord between the RV and the socket on the Jeep
- Attach the break away cord
It takes about 5 minutes. Here is a pic of the completed setup:
The the steps inside the Jeep are even easier:
- Put the transfer case in neutral
- Ensure the parking brake is off
- Ensure the transmission is in 1st gear (or Park for an automatic)
- Hook up your auxiliary braking system (we use Brake Buddy)
That’s it. It takes all of 30 seconds. No steering lock to worry about, no fuses to pull, no stopping every 400 miles to start the engine.
