Klamath, CA – Grassy sites with some trees that are ok on space. The campground seems to cater to fishermen, which is fine, but the owners apparently condone feeding black bears the leftover fish carcasses — at the fish cleaning station in the campground! The largest black bear we have seen came by every evening around dusk. Based on that alone we would not return. There are a number of other RV parks in the area.
We checked out Redwoods National & State Park; Battery Point Lighthouse; Jebediah Smith State Park and Prairie Creek State Park for hiking and lots of Redwoods.
Fishing: The area is known for King Salmon and Steelhead fishing August thru October and Spring Chinook in May & June. This campground is riverfront.
Driving note: If you’re headed southwest to the coast of CA you’ll end up taking US 199, which is a bit tight in some corners. There were a few times I had no choice but to go well over the centerline to avoid hitting a Redwood tree immediately next to the road. It’s a doable drive, just approach the sharp corners slowly and be prepared if a semi or another RV is coming the other way.
