Loveland, CO – Nicely laid out campground with plenty of space. It’s located along the Big Thompson River just a short drive from the town of Loveland and about a 45 min drive into Rocky Mountain National Park. We especially enjoyed evening walks at the nearby Devil’s Backbone Open Space. We originally planned to stay just 4 nights, but as more activities cropped up (oh, and buying a new motorhome), we added 12 additional days. This campground was hit hard with flash flooding in September 2013, but has since rebuilt. There is plenty of fishing opportunity along the Big Thompson River. This campground also had many birds.
So, the new motorhome. This post explains our dissatisfaction with our gas-er unit. As it happens we ended up camping next to a couple with a Tiffin Phaeton, the same brand we own but a diesel model a few notches up the model line. We got to talking about how well it drives (no shouting to be heard or screaming that you’re going to be blown off the road) and his fuel economy was the same as ours despite having well over twice the power (1050 torque vs 457). As luck would have it, the local Tiffin dealer (20 mins away) had a 36′ Phaeton in stock. We loved everything about it, and the test drive sealed the deal. The problem was price. The dealer was $30,000 higher then our goal. I don’t claim to be an especially good negotiator, but I simply stated what we wanted to pay and that we’re leaving now…call if you change your mind. I never expected to hear back. The next morning I get a call and they said “deal”.
