The Tiffin Allegro Open Road 32CA. Summary: we loved the floorplan and we loved the price (compared to the diesel models). We loathed the chassis. Here’s the problem, the first time you test drive a motorhome: Instead of focusing of how the vehicle drives, you’re scared shitless about hitting things. Long story short, gas powered motorhomes built on a van chassis suck in comparison to diesel pushers. The engine, an 6.8 liter V10, makes max HP of 362 at 4750 RPM. The vehicle (with tow car) weighs ~26,000 pounds. The engine is under where you sit. What does all that mean? The engine is always at 4750 RPM and you can’t hear yourself think, let alone converse with your passenger. Unfortunately noise does not equal power, so there you are in the right most lane of I-70, ascending up the Rockies at 35 mph, with the “blinkers of shame” on, getting passed by semi trucks that are labeled “over weight load”. Oh, and the ride sucks (kinda like driving a Uhaul rental truck, but instead of 20 miles it’s for the rest of your life). And the brakes suck (ditto). And any cross wind over 20 mph causes immediate screams from everyone on board because it feels like you’re being pushed off the road.
