Moran, WY – Many of the online reviews for this campground, located 2 miles south of Yellowstone National Park and 5 miles north of Grand Teton National Park, are rather negative, averaging around 2 out of 5 stars, and generally I understand why. The price is high ($83/night as of 2020), the campground will leave all your equipment very dusty (it’s an all dirt campground that, when it rains, turns to mud) and there are few amenities (no cable, no wifi, no cellular service, no pool, no playgrounds). And if you have a big rig, the site you’re assigned will play a large factor in your overall enjoyment. The site we were first assigned, #511, was so narrow (due to pine trees) we could not extend a single slide on either side. We also were unable to level. If that had been our site for 7 days I would have rated this place a 0. But Karla asked if any larger sites were available, and due to our early arrival in the day (2:30 PM), there were a few sites left we could consider. After looking at them Karla chose #415, which is considerably larger and fairly level. With all sides extended I now rate this place a 3.

Our final site was wide enough to accommodate all slides

We still had a tree in one slide, but at least we could open them

Therefore I recommend anyone with big rig with slides on both sides arrive as close as possible to check-in time (2 PM) and ask to view available sites. They were very accommodating and had no problems with us looking at sites that may work. Also, I can guarantee #415 will fit any size rig. I saw one other 45′ coach here (Tiffin Zephyr), so there are sites that will accommodate us, you just may need to be flexible. It’s a little odd they place non-hookup tent sites immediately next to full hook up RV sites. One night the low dropped to 17 F and our Oasis diesel hydronic heating was running throughout the night, loudly spewing noxious diesel exhaust, which I’m sure the people in the tent 30 feet away did not appreciate.

Once safely ensconced in your heavily forested site you’ll likely enjoy the surroundings, along with the peace and quiet pine trees always seem to bring. It’s camping! Seriously, for those of us with big rigs that frequent the larger class A parks, let’s be honest, that doesn’t really seem like camping. We really enjoyed our stay and would likely return. Immediately across the street from the campground is a fuel station (large enough for a 45′ RV to maneuver around and fill up on diesel), a convenience store, and a restaurant, which during our stay in 2020 was closed and offering pre-packaged take out meals due to COVID-19.

We were able to fuel up across the street where there is also a convenience store, lodge and restaurant

Headwaters at Flagg Ranch is approximately a 25 minute drive to the Willow Flats and Oxbow Bend, two popular wildlife and landscape viewing locations in Grand Teton NP. In addition to sightseeing, we hiked the following trails while staying at Headwaters: Beula Lake Trail, Terraced Falls Trail, and Bechler Region Short Loop in Yellowstone NP accessed via Grassy Lake Road; String Lake Loop and Emma Matilda Lake Loop in Grand Teton NP; and Pacific Creek Trail in the Teton Wilderness accessed via Pacific Creek Road in Grand Teton NP.
