Ridgway, CO – A solid, albeit expensive, KOA campground. If you’ve stayed at enough KOA’s, you know the drill: the sites are close together, the roads are gravel/dirt and everything is perfectly alright. It’s not great, it’s not horrible, it’s ok. This KOA is about 5 miles north of the town of Ouray, which can be argued as both a pro and a con. The con is you can’t walk anywhere. The pro is less town noise. But the scenery here is breathtaking, with imposing mountains to the west and red-rock hillsides to the east. We arrived here via the Million Dollar Highway.

Our site (#99) was long and level. But our slides were within 3 feet of the unit next to us. Electric was, as is commonly the case at non-class A motocoach resorts, not stable enough to provide 120 volts on both legs during the heat of the afternoon, when everyone is running their ACs. We frequently ran at 113 volts all afternoon long. The water hookups were oddly placed, making for a difficult and time-consuming connection. No cable and no wifi (as of 2020) were offered at the sites. Wifi is available in the office. The new owners have planned a wifi upgrade but it was postponed due to COVID-19.  For $75/night I don’t think this represents a good value.

Our site had enough room for slides. Our steps barely cleared the ground rails

Our slides were very close to our neighbors on the hook-up side

There was limited space to maneuver the water hook-up

The sites were plenty long for the RV and Jeep

The Ouray KOA offers an on-site restaurant and bakery, which we passed up due to COVID-19, but seems like a nice addition. There is apparently a hot tub (same) and they deliver firewood and ice right to your site, you can order ice and firewood via text. As for the rating, I’m giving it just a 3 due to lack of amenities (no pool?), the high price, the tight sites and the unstable 50 AMP power.

Yaks Ouray

As you turn off Highway 550 to go to the KOA there is a field of Yaks on the north side of the road… one of Karla’s favorite features

From Ouray KOA we hiked:

We also drove our Jeep on 4WD/High Clearance Roads:

On previous trips we’ve driven Cinnamon, Engineer & Imogene Passes.
