Bar Harbor, ME – Located right on Mt Desert Island: a prime location befitting a prime price. It’s about a 10 minute drive to the town of Bar Harbor (try 2 Cats Restaurant for breakfast) and also about 10 minutes to the entrance of Acadia National Park. This is an ideal location for exploring the many trails and carriage roads within the National Park, as well as finding whale watching tours and eating lobster (you can’t shake a stick around Bar Harbor without hitting a lobster pound). This KOA also serves lobster right on site, in addition to an ice cream parlor in a converted air stream trailer. There is certainly plenty of family fun at this campground.
If you’re ok with paying more to get less, opt for the Oceanfront sites, which have 30 amps and no sewer hookups for $10/night more than sites with 50 amps AND sewer hookups. Karla thought this tradeoff was worth a view of the ocean. I do not. They do offer a pump out service for a fee and have a convenient dump near the exit. Also, egress from our site, #364, was challenging to say the least, requiring backing up around a 90 degree corner and then backing up another 100 feet to find the road. Having said all that, once ensconced and leveled (not an easy task) in the site, the view was phenomenal and all utilities worked well.
