Marathon, FL – What a view! I found myself repeating that refrain as my gaze lingered on the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, while relaxing under the on-site palapa, just a short walk from any RV site. Karla and I enjoyed a homemade piña colada most evenings while watching the sunset from cozy lounge chairs provided by the park. There is also a put-in for watercraft located right on-site.

Our site (#14) was long and level and just wide enough to extend slides without hitting palm trees. Backing into the site was a bit of an issue due to a poorly parked vehicle across from the site, which had been given a “30 minute parking exemption” and there was nothing the manager could do about it . Had that vehicle not been present ingress would have been no problem. Utilities were ok, although water pressure was low and wifi was worthless. We would have preferred a waterfront site, but were told in May that those sites usually book at least a year in advance! Even our non-waterfront site was only available for four nights at the time we reserved. We visited Key West and took the boat tour to Dry Tortugas National Park while staying here.

Grassy Key is part of the Marathon chain of Keys, and this entire area was hit hard by Hurricane Irma back in October. Large piles of debris litter both sides of the road, and perhaps only 50% of restaurants and grocery stores are open for business as of this writing (January 1, 2018). But I saw numerous dump trucks and heavy pieces of equipment removing the piles everyday, allowing locals to hope for a speedy recovery.
