Key Largo, FL – A beautiful location with nicely landscaped grounds, luxurious amenities and a bevy of nice class A motorhomes (two Essex and a London Aire in our row, an Allegro Bus and a Grand Tour the row over and a very nice Marathon Prevost by the water). From here we visited Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park and the John Pennekamp Coral Reef Sate Park. There is a pool area and a bike/walking path along Highway One allows for biking/walking right from the resort. So why the low rating? For $150/night I expect a campground to be approaching flawless. This one had a number of glaring flaws, all of which pertain to the site.

Keys Palms offer a handful of pull-in waterfront sites

The first problem, which I noticed pulling in, was this gravel site (#21) was very unlevel, with the front being much higher than the rear and the drivers side higher than the passenger side. We are no strangers to leveling an RV on unlevel sites after traveling in the hinterlands of the Yukon and Alaska, and for $20/night you’ll get no argument from me. But for this price? I had to use 8 blocks to get us close, and still never achieved level front-to-back. I started by driving onto 3″ blocks for all tires on the drive and tag axles (6 tires). I then placed 3″ blocks under the rear jacks. The entire rear end still needed to come up another 1-2″ to be level, but I already wasn’t thrilled about so many blocks under so many tires. I notified management, who immediately said this is the first they’ve heard of leveling problems on site #21. Yeah right. They offered me more blocks, which I guess was nice, but for this price the site needs to be level — and it needs to be concrete.

Our site was unlevel both front to back and side to side

Problem #2, which I noticed affected other sites, was that our drivers side slide was in the hedges when extended. I don’t mean almost touching, I mean into the hedge. Not ideal for the clear coat when wind rustles the leaves on the hedge. The Essex next to us, on site #20, was into the hedge even more than us. It wasn’t like we parked too far to one side. The sites are narrow. Either you park on the brick patio or your driver’s slide is in the hedges.

Our slide was into the hedge (back half) and tree

Once in our site, it felt fairly private despite proximity to our neighbor

Our toad fit in our site, but some sites had to utilize overflow parking

Problem #3, which is the least important, was water pressure was only 35 psi. Again, at a certain price you overlook this. But this park, by a factor of 2, is the most expensive RV park we’ve stayed in, but doesn’t crack the top 10 by niceness.

We would not stay here again.
