Darby, MT – We highly recommend this campground for anyone keen on hiking and exploring the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the Bitterroot National Forest. There is no closer access that has full hookups. The campground is located just north of downtown Darby, a short walk from the “grocery” store, across the street from the Montana Cafe (we loved the breakfast) and just a few blocks from downtown proper. The nearby town of Hamilton, about 17 miles north, has many more services than Darby, including larger grocery stores.
The sites are all back-in affairs, but are plenty long and all utilities worked well. The owners are very accommodating and trimmed the trees so we could open our slides. Please note, if you’re arriving from the north, the right hand turn into the campground is very tight and requires, at least on a 45′ RV, swinging into the lane of oncoming traffic to make. We stayed here 5 nights in site #2 and wished for more. We would definitely stay here again.
