Haines, AK – A centrally located and tranquil RV park situated at the “end of the road” in Haines, AK. The majority of RVers reach Haines via the only road access, the Haines Highway, driving South from Haines Junction in the Yukon Territory. It is possible, although impressively costly, to transport your RV to Haines using a ferry from other ports in Alaska, such as Skagway or Juneau. Regardless of means of conveyance, you will likely enjoy your stay at the Haines Hitch-Up.

The park consists of 92 long, grassy sites with large, packed gravel access roads, a very clean laundry area (8 washers and 4 dryers) and lots of well manicured space. There are zero trees between the sites, which is a good thing in my opinion for not scratching the paint on a wayward branch. Our pull through site, #68, was perfectly level and easily fit our rig with room to spare. The full hookups worked fine, including a generous section of cable tv channels. We opted for the “Platinum medal site”, a fairly hefty $56/night for 50 amp full hookups. Oddly, they charge an additional $3.50/night for any potential electric heat and/or AC usage, even if you only need heat/AC for a single night during a 7 night stay! The resulting total of $59.50/night for a sleepy town at a very non-busy time of year is of questionable value.

This parks location cannot be beat, being just a short walk to town with a car/RV wash across the street and a fuel station just down the road. I estimate the walk to the center of town takes 10 minutes. We stayed here in early September, just before the park shut down for the year on September 11, 2016. It’s interesting watching a park getting ready for the winter, with the picnic tables all moved to a central area and stacked vertically and the brochures for the various activities being packed away. Perhaps this is a sign for those few intrepid campers left that it’s time to migrate south for the winter.

While in Haines, we visited Kroschel Film’s Wildlife Center, located about 28 miles north of town; took the poedestrian fast ferry for a day trip to Skagway, Alaska; rafted down the Chilkat River through the Bald Eagle Preserve with Chilkat River Guides; and took a fantastic flight-seeing trip over Glacier Bay National Park with Mountain Flying Service. We also hiked Battery Point and Seduction Point Trails in the Chilkat State Recreation Area and watched bears on the Chilkoot River.
