Denali Area, AK – There aren’t many options for staying right outside of Denali National Park, but this one is likely the best. The park is located about 8 miles north of the entrance, which is 8 miles further away than the only other option, Denali Rainbow RV Park, located right at the park entrance. But bad reviews about fluctuating voltage levels from fellow RVers led us to avoid it. From this campground you can enter the park to access the bus system, Hike Savage Alpine and Mountain Vista Trails; Hike the Mt. Healy Trail; Hike the Horseshoe Lake Trail; Visit Denali’s working Sled Dog Kennel; or take an ATV tour with Denali ATV Adventures. There are also companies that offer rafting, flight-seeing; ziplines, and jeep tours.

One positive was the view during our second stay

We stayed at Denali RV Park and Motel for a single night just to fill up on water and dump holding tanks before heading into Denali for 6 nights of dry camping. After camping in Denali, we decided to spend our other 5 nights in the area back at Denali RV Park and Motel. On our second stay we scored one of the few “pull through” sites, though it would be impossible to pull through the site as it is located on a tight corner. Most sites are fairly tight back-in affairs, with electric and water hookups at the very back, making for long hose runs that stretched the limit of a 25 foot hose. The sewer hookups were conveniently located however, so all-in-all the hookups are fine.

Our “pull through” site was located next to to motel rooms and on a corner

Our “pull through” site

Getting into and out of spaces can be difficult depending on what length rig is located across from you. Since the sites are all narrow, tow vehicles must be parked in front of the RVs, making for even more difficult maneuvering. Ingress was a bit tight, but the gentlemen across the way nicely moved his pickup truck to facility our entry. Luckily that same gentlemen left before us the next morning so egress was a snap.

We did not stay at the motel, but I noticed an odd sign in the communal bathroom/shower area that seemed to indicate that not only did motel guests need to use the communal shower, they had to pay an extra $5/person!
