Home to one of the most “road accessible glaciers”, the Matanuska Glacier Recreation Site offers views of the glacier, but to access the glacier you will need to use a nearby private tour as the access is through private property. This site is off of the Glenn Highway, about 100 miles east of Anchorage. There is a one mile nature trail loop that provided several other viewing locations, but they were not significantly better spots than the one at the parking area. The trail winds through a boreal forest. There are some steep sections. It definitely provided a good leg stretching.

We stopped at this Recreation Site to view the glacier and spend the night. There is a small campground for tenting and small RV’s. They allow longer rigs, like ours, to camp in the parking lot for the same fee ($20 in 2016). This is an easy in/out and we did not have to unhook our tow vehicle. The lot will hold about maybe 10 RV’s. Unfortunately it is on quite a steep angle, but it can suffice for a night. The price used to be $10, which would be a better bargain.
