Dawson City, YT – I’ve said it before (Cherry Creek State Park) but I’ll say it again: public campgrounds are better than private campground. Period. They are cheaper, have larger spaces and offer significantly more buffer room between sites. The Klondike River Campground run by the Yukon Government is a perfect example. For $12/night we had a long, wide site (space #17) with enough trees to hide any neighbors (of which there were none). Sure, you don’t get any hookups, but this is camping!

Klondike River Campground

Plenty of space for the slides

The campground is about 12 miles east of Dawson City and 12 miles west of the start of the Dempster Highway with its access to Tombstone Territorial Park. Dawson City and the area around it are rich with the history of the Klondike Gold Rush. Don’t forget to check out the Midnight Dome with it’s spectacular views of the Yukon River, Dawson City and the surrounding mountains. There are numerous food options in Dawson City. Note there is a very conveniently located AFD cardlock fuel station (with both gas and diesel) at the start of the Dempster Highway. There are no reservations taken for any Yukon Government campground, but we had no problems finding available spaces.
