Centreville, VA – We originally chose this state park campground as it’s close to family. We typically spend 1-2 weeks here over Thanksgiving (for the past 5 years). But I now believe it’s one of the best options for those visiting the Washington, DC area in a big rig. Like other state park campgrounds we’ve used, the sites are semi-circular and staggered along a road that backs to trees. We often find ourselves outside lounging in chairs at this campground, which is something we rarely do as most campgrounds are too densely populated and/or have lots of noise. This campground has some walking trails.
The downsides are few. The sites are not the most level, but given they are typically 100ft long we’ve always found a spot that leveled perfectly. The drive into and out of the campground is fairly long, I would say on the order of 10 mins to get to a larger road (I-66, 28 and 29 are all easily accessible). And the price is fairly expensive for what you get (i.e., no wifi, no cable), but remember, you’re in the DC metro area.
The other tip is for travelers staying during the Christmas season, who will be subjected to the nightly Festival of Lights show. It can be an inconvenience as the only road into the campground will be clogged by holiday-light-seeking aficionados shortly before sunset. If you arrive well before or well after this time you’ll have no problem. Plus you get a free light show.
